Rio Tinto miners in Australia have managed to unearth the biggest ever pink diamond found in the country. Almost 90 per cent of the world’s pink diamonds are produced from the Argyle mine of Rio Tinto, situated in the Kimberly region. With this new addition in their kitty, they are now in the possession of the most sparkling piece of pink diamond ever.
The rare find has been named ‘Argyle Pink Jubilee’ and weighs 12.76 carats. As per the estimation, this stone is expected to fetch anything between the £20 and £25 million at auction.
This rare diamond is generating incredible excitement,” said Josephine Johnson from Rio’s Argyle Pink Diamonds division. Johnson further added, “A diamond of this calibre is unprecedented. It has taken 26 years of Argyle production to unearth this stone and we may never see one like this again.”
The Argyle Pink Jubilee is quite similar to the 24 carat Williamson Pink given to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding gift. It was later set into a Cartier brooch for her coronation.
