Someone who has followed the popular sitcom ‘FRIENDS’, will surely remember the episode where Monica (Courtney Cox) goes down on her knees and proposes Chandler (Matthew Perry). Millions of women wept with her during that episode. But it’s not just in the reel world where a woman can propose a man.
Leap year that comes every four years has a very old and interesting tradition attached to it. It is believed that Saint Patrick or Brigid of Kildare in the 5th century, Ireland allowed a woman to propose the man of her dreams on the Leap Day i.e. 29th February, which comes only once in four years. No one can prove the authenticity of this tradition, but nonetheless because the tradition is so interesting and fun, people follow it anyway.
In the old world, it was quite evident that women didn’t enjoy much freedom. So traditions like this helped women to hide behind it and take bold decisions such as not waiting for the man to pop the question but instead do it herself. But now the times have changed drastically.
Today’s women are independent, earn them, and don’t shy away from asking and doing what they really want. So for a woman it isn’t a big deal to propose to her partner. Hence, you can see the number of women proposing their man is steadily increasing and it is not necessarily on the 29th February.
